The biggest prize
in aerospace

Win two fascinating days of airborne and simulator flight training. The competition is open to you if you are a current full-time student in higher education.

The prize

Day one

The prize begins at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire UK giving you a unique hands-on insight into the science of aerospace at one of the world’s most highly regarded aerospace engineering institutions.

Experience acrobatic flight in the Scottish Aviation Bulldog

Start with an overview of the basics of aircraft flight control by attending a pre-flight briefing before strapping into Cranfield’s Scottish Aviation Bulldog for a unique hands-on flight experience. Experience rolls, stall turns and near zero gravity as our instructor puts the Bulldog through its paces. Take control and pilot the aircraft whilst learning more about aircraft dynamics as our instructor bridges the gap between class room theory and light aircraft flight.

Flight simulator session

Experience the thrill of take-off and landing in Cranfield’s flight simulator. As a pre-cursor for the second day our simulator instructor will guide you through the basic controls of an aircraft, then take control and perform a take-off and landing in a fixed base simulator. Can you land an aircraft at your first attempt?

Day two

Day Two of the experience is based at the British Airways Global Learning Academy (Heathrow), the division responsible for providing aircraft type conversion courses and on-going training for BA flight crew.

Commercial airline training experience with British Airways

Take control of a multi-million pound, full motion flight simulator. This is your opportunity to fly a Boeing flight simulator, normally reserved for the exclusive training of professional pilots. First you will be given a 30 minute pre-flight briefing including flight deck instruments, controls and systems. Once your training is complete you will be at the controls from take-off to touchdown, including start-up and shut-down.

Tour the Global Learning Academy training facilities

The Cranfield Aero Experience takes you behind the scenes where you will experience what it takes to safely operate and maintain modern airliners. Take a virtual reality walkthrough a modern airliner uncovering the complex engineering system that enable it’s flight, you may also have the opportunity to experience a simulated flight on a full motion cabin simulator, leading to an emergency landing and full aircraft evacuation from a smoke filled environment.

Accommodation, travel and meals

Your Cranfield host will arrange travel between rail and bus terminals in Milton Keynes or Bedford to Cranfield and British Airways at Heathrow. You will enjoy hotel accommodation for two nights in Milton Keynes city centre, alongside relaxing evening meals with your hosts. Up to £300 travel costs will be reimbursed to cover your travel expenses within, or to, the UK.
